We traveled East from London to Ulaanbaatar in 2010 in the Mongol Rally. Maps of the 13 countries we visited are below, as are our Mongol Rally route maps.

The above map shows our route in 2008 (in blue) where we flew from China to Ulaan Bataar, Mongolia for a week of ger R&R. In 2010 we will travel to Mongolia with the Mongol Rally (in red) before exiting into China and then to South East Asia.

The map above shows our all-too brief journey through Kazakhstan in 2009. We began by crossing from China, by rail, into Kazakhstan and then skirting around Lake Balkhash to Almaty, where we spent a day before taking the train to Uzbekistan.

The above map shows the route we took in Uzbekistan 2009 from Kazakhstan into Tashkent to Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, Urgench and back to Bukhara before crossing the border on foot into Turkmenistan.

The map above shows our Turkmenistan route in 2009. We entered the country on foot from Uzbekistan into Turkmenabat before traveling to Ashgabat. We traveled to Turkmenbashi, Nohur and Darvaza, as well as Mary, Merv and Gonur before taking the train to Turkmenbashi again and catching the ferry across the Caspian Sea to the Caucus.

The above map shows our actual route in 2009. We took the ferry from Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan to Baku, Azerbaijan and then traveled around the city for several days before taking the night train to Georgia via Boyuk Kasik.

The above map shows our actual route in 2009 from the Azerbaijan-Georgia border on the south-east to Tbilisi by train, and then up to Kazbegi in the north between South Ossetia and Chechnya in the north. From there we went by bus to Mtskheta, the cultural homeland of Georgia. And then west to Gori, Stalin’s birthplace. Then camping in Borjomi before cutting west to Kutaisi, Georgia’s second largest city, and then west to Poti, where Jason and his Argonauts entered Georgia, and then south to Batumi and exiting into Turkey via Sarpi.

The above shows our actual route in 2009 from the Republic of Georgia through the Sarpi border into Turkey, and then down various mountain valleys to Yusufeli. From there to Trabzon and along the Black Sea Coast to Safranbolu before heading to Ankara. From Ankara we cut south to Capadocia and Tarsus before following the Mediterranean Coast westward to Troy and Gallipoli and then into Istanbul before exiting the country into Bulgaria.

The above map depicts our actual route in 2009 from Turkey through the Bulgarian Ormenion border crossing to Plovdiv by train, and then by bus to Bachkovo Monastery before taking the train to Sofia and crossing the border into Serbia.
